Destry Damayanti Seeks First Female Governor Role at Bank Indonesia

Destry Damayanti underwent a parliamentary fit-and-proper test to become the first woman to lead Bank Indonesia for a five-year term.

Acting chief Destry Damayanti underwent a parliamentary fit-and-proper test on Wednesday to secure a full five-year term as governor of Bank Indonesia from 2026 to 2031. Nominated as the sole candidate by President Prabowo Subianto, Damayanti would be the first woman to lead the monetary authority since its establishment in 1953.

During her vetting, Damayanti pledged to maintain stability and act preemptively to steady the rupiah through pro-market monetary operations and smart interventions. A senior deputy governor since 2019, she aims to reassure investors following the abrupt July resignation of her predecessor, Perry Warjiyo.

Her proposed strategy includes strengthening coordination with the government and a new commodity export monitoring agency. Damayanti also intends to shift away from high-yield securities to prevent the central bank from soaking up too much market liquidity.
