Hakainde Hichilema Leads Zambia Presidential Election Count

President Hakainde Hichilema of the United Party for National Development holds a lead in Zambia's presidential election following the general vote held on August 13. According to the Electoral Commission of Zambia, Hichilema is on track for re-election, with reports indicating he holds 54.82% of votes from 105 declared constituencies.

His primary challenger, Brian Mundubile of the National Reconciliation Party for Unity and Prosperity, follows in second place. The election serves as a referendum on Hichilema's economic management following a pandemic-era debt crisis. Under Zambian law, a candidate must secure more than 50% of valid votes to avoid a second-round runoff.

The counting process faced disruptions on Friday when the electoral commission temporarily halted operations. These delays were caused by ballot paper theft and violence directed against election officials.
