China Deploys 49th Naval Escort Fleet to Gulf of Aden

The People's Liberation Army Navy dispatched its 49th naval escort fleet from a military port in Sanya, Hainan Province, on August 12, 2026. Bound for the Gulf of Aden and waters off Somalia, the fleet consists of the guided-missile destroyer Kunming, the guided-missile frigate Yueyang, and the comprehensive supply ship Luomahu, supported by two helicopters and dozens of special operations personnel.

This deployment marks the first escort mission for the Kunming. The 49th fleet replaces the 48th fleet, which had been operational since October 2025. The Ministry of National Defense of China announced the rotation on August 11, confirming the mission's objective to safeguard international shipping routes.

China has maintained a regular naval presence in the region since 2008, operating under United Nations Security Council resolutions. To date, Chinese warships have escorted more than 7,000 Chinese and foreign vessels and assisted in the evacuation of citizens from war-torn countries.
