SpaceX and Tesla Face Merger Speculation Ahead of Earnings

SpaceX and Tesla are reporting third-quarter results amid analyst predictions that the two companies could merge before the end of 2026.

Speculation is growing that Space Exploration Technologies Corp. and Tesla may merge before the end of 2026, with some analysts suggesting a deal could be announced before Tesla's annual general meeting, which must occur by December 6. Analysts from Barclays, including Dan Levy, indicate that SpaceX is the likely acquirer and that favorable conditions under the Trump administration may accelerate the process. This political climate is highlighted by Elon Musk's reported $276 million donation to Republican campaign efforts for the upcoming midterm elections.

The companies are reporting third-quarter financial results on Tuesday and Wednesday. SpaceX, which went public in June and absorbed xAI in February, is expected to report revenue of approximately $12.74 billion. Tesla is projected to report revenue of about $27.88 billion, with investors monitoring its robotaxi and Optimus humanoid robot initiatives. To signal technological integration, Tesla recently unveiled a new Roadster sports car at a SpaceX test site in Texas that utilizes rocket technology for mid-air maneuvers.

Financial analysts note that while a merger could unlock synergies and ease capital raising, the high valuations of both companies mean an announcement might not trigger a significant stock surge. Meanwhile, SpaceX is expanding its Starlink Mobile capabilities, having agreed on October 8 to purchase 800 MHz spectrum from Grain Management for $8 billion, pending Federal Communications Commission approval.
