ARIA Bans Wholly AI-Generated Music From Official Charts

The Australian Recording Industry Association implemented new guidelines effective Friday that ban music wholly generated by artificial intelligence from the ARIA Charts. To maintain eligibility, tracks must be substantially human made. The rules exclude songs where AI generates the entirety or the primary portion of creative elements, though recordings using generative AI in a supporting role remain permitted.

This policy shift follows industry concerns regarding a surge in AI-generated content. In July, an AI-assisted cover of Madonna's Like a Prayer reached the top of the charts, highlighting the potential for synthetic media to displace human artists.

CEO Annabelle Herd stated the decision is intended to protect the human nature of artistry and prevent the rewarding of unlicensed AI output. Separately, Spotify announced the launch of an AI Persona badge to help listeners identify producers of AI-generated content.
