Multicultural Business Coalition Sues New York City Over Municipal Stores

The Multicultural Business Coalition (MBC), an immigrant-led nonprofit representing 50 chambers of commerce, voted to sue New York City to block a $70 million plan to open five taxpayer-funded supermarkets. The initiative, proposed by Mayor Zohran Mamdani, includes offering 30% discounts on basic staples like meat, produce, and milk. The MBC intends to raise $1 million to fund the legal challenge and support struggling small business owners.

MBC Chairman Frank Garcia alleges the project creates unfair competition for mom-and-pop shops, particularly in East Harlem. He notes that city-run stores will have an advantage by occupying municipal property and avoiding rent payments. Representatives from the United Bodegas of America warned that such deep discounts would drive customers away from existing stores.

Mayor Zohran Mamdani contends the stores will not compete with local bodegas because they will exclude items such as cigarettes, alcohol, and lottery tickets. Despite the legal opposition, the city plans to open the first municipal store in the Bronx next year.
