Three Migrants Die as Mega-Dinghy Capsizes Off Wissant
Three migrants died and dozens were injured Monday when a crowded dinghy capsized off the coast of Wissant, France, during an attempt to reach the United Kingdom.
At least three migrants, including a ten-year-old boy and two women in their 30s, died Monday morning when a mega-dinghy capsized off the coast of Wissant, France. The vessel, which the Prefecture of Pas-de-Calais described as a water taxi, was carrying approximately 105 people attempting to reach the United Kingdom.
French authorities reported that sea conditions were calm at the time of the accident. Rescue operations transported dozens of severely injured passengers to the port of Calais, where they received emergency assistance from police, fire services, and medical teams. This incident follows a similar event last week that resulted in three deaths in northern France, contributing to a total of at least 24 deaths in the English Channel this year.
French prosecutors have opened criminal enquiries, and judicial police are investigating the cause of the deaths. Separately, UK Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood ordered an urgent review by the Border Security Command following two uncontrolled landings of migrant boats last week.
