UK Government Cuts Funding for LHCb and Lovell Telescope

The Government of the United Kingdom and UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) have announced substantial funding cuts to major scientific projects and research facilities. The measures include a complete cessation of funding for the Lovell telescope beginning in March 2028 and the withdrawal of financial support for the Large Hadron Collider beauty (LHCb) upgrade at Cern.

While the UKRI budget is projected to reach £10 billion by 2030, the funding for research councils supporting fundamental science has dropped by 40% to 50% in real terms since 2011. Budget increases have primarily benefited Innovate UK, the corporate-focused arm of the organization.

Scientists and former government advisers argue that these decisions damage international partnerships and restrict opportunities for postdoctoral researchers and PhD students. Paula Collins, the LHCb deputy spokesperson at Cern, warned that the funding withdrawal risks cutting off a generation of UK scientists.
