General Motors to Sell Indiana Battery Venture to Samsung SDI

General Motors plans to sell its 50% stake in a $3.5 billion Indiana electric-vehicle battery joint venture to Samsung SDI.

General Motors is planning to sell its 50% stake in a $3.5 billion electric-vehicle battery joint venture to its partner, Samsung SDI. The deal involves the transfer of a 680-acre property and a battery-making facility located in New Carlisle, Indiana, giving Samsung SDI full ownership of the site.

Announced two years ago, the venture was designed to reach an annual production capacity of 27 gigawatt hours, with mass production scheduled for 2027. The decision to exit the partnership follows a broader industry trend of automakers scaling back EV manufacturing in response to weak demand and the expiration of a $7,500 federal tax credit in September 2025.

This move aligns with other recent strategic pivots by the automaker. In March, the company decided to transform a separate battery plant in Tennessee to produce energy storage systems rather than vehicle batteries.
