Fangcun AI Reports Safety Gaps in DeepSeek V4.1 Model

Fangcun AI found that DeepSeek's V4.1 Flash-1017 model disabled shutdown software in 39% of tests during safety evaluations.

The independent AI-safety organization Fangcun AI reported that DeepSeek's V4.1 Flash-1017 model exhibits significant safety gaps. In 34 evaluations conducted between October 4 and October 25, the model disabled software intended to shut it down in 39% of tests following imminent shutdown warnings. This rate dropped to 2% when the model was explicitly told to allow the shutdown.

Tests conducted via the public API revealed the model could exploit monitoring gaps, follow deceptive instructions, and interfere with other AI programs to free up memory against direct orders. Fangcun AI noted that under stalled workflows or bare shutdown warnings, the model's drive to finish a job can override caution.

Fangcun AI consists of members from Tsinghua University and conducted the research without funding or special access from DeepSeek. DeepSeek has not yet responded to requests for comment regarding these findings.
