New York Residents Testify in Nationwide Immigration Enforcement Hearings
New York residents testified Thursday at the People's Hearings to document federal immigration enforcement impacts and drive systemic changes in the 2027 Congress.
New York residents participated in the People's Hearings on Thursday as part of a nationwide initiative to document the impacts of federal immigration enforcement. Participants provided testimony regarding the use of force by immigration agents and conditions within detention centers.
Rochelle Garza, chair of the U.S. Commission on Civil Rights, characterized the federal crackdown as a "direct undermining of our democracy." She alleged that individuals are being racially profiled and disappeared across various U.S. cities, noting that the patterns she observed were consistent from Saint Paul to San Antonio.
Organizers and advocates are using these hearings to build a public record intended to drive systemic changes. They plan to deliver a comprehensive report based on these testimonies to the new Congress in 2027.
