NATO Deploys Surveillance Assets After Black Sea Drone Strikes

NATO is deploying additional surveillance and reconnaissance assets to the Black Sea following suspected Russian drone attacks on shipping near Bulgaria and Romania.

The North Atlantic Treaty Organization announced the deployment of additional surveillance, reconnaissance, and forensics capabilities to the Black Sea on October 20. The move follows a series of drone strikes targeting shipping off the coasts of Bulgaria and Romania that left more than 20 sailors missing.

Bulgarian Prime Minister Rumen Radev confirmed that a United States P-8 Poseidon aircraft has already begun patrolling the region to detect risks. The deployment was finalized during a meeting of alliance ambassadors in Brussels.

European Union diplomat Kaja Kallas described the six attacks occurring within 10 days as a dangerous escalation by suspected Russian drones. Kallas stated that the Kremlin is attempting to disrupt Ukrainian grain exports to deprive Kyiv of revenue, which further strains a global food supply already impacted by regional droughts and conflict in the Middle East.
