S&P 500 Ends 53-Day Stability Streak With 1.1% Drop

The S&P 500 fell 1.1% on October 14, ending a 53-trading-day period without a daily decline of 1% or more.

The S&P 500 ended a 53-trading-day streak of relative stability on Wednesday, October 14, 2026, when the index fell approximately 1.1% to close around 7,719. This decline followed a period of unusual calm that had pushed the index to a close of 7,805 on October 13, nearing its record close of 7,819 established on October 6.

The streak stood in contrast to a volatile start to the year, during which the index recorded 18 daily drops of 1% or more between January and July 29.

Historical analysis of 55 similar streaks since 1950 suggests these periods do not reliably predict long-term market direction. In 74% of past cases, the index was higher one year after reaching the 50-session mark, a rate consistent with the general market average. However, short-term performance immediately following such streaks has historically been weaker than normal, with some previous periods of calm preceding significant sell-offs in 2018 and 2020.
