RSS Leader Mohan Bhagwat Faces Protests During New York Visit

The chief of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), Mohan Bhagwat, is visiting New York as part of a three-nation outreach tour of the United States, Canada, and the United Kingdom. The visit coincides with the centenary of the RSS's 1925 founding. On August 29, billboards featuring Bhagwat and the words "Resolve, Harmony and Dialogue" appeared in Times Square ahead of his scheduled address at the Universal Oneness Celebration at Madison Square Garden.

Organized by American Hindus for Engagement and Dialogue, the event is expected to draw over 5,000 attendees from 39 states. Spokesperson Priya Samant described the gathering as a celebration of the Indian philosophy Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam, meaning the world is one big family. The program includes cultural performances and hymn chanting to promote peace and harmony.

The visit has sparked significant controversy. New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani condemned the event, stating the RSS is predicated on an exclusionary vision, though he noted the city lacks the legal power to stop a private gathering. A coalition of 62 organizations, including the Indian American Muslim Council, has organized protests, accusing the RSS of promoting Hindu nationalism and Muslim hate.

Adding to the tension, the United States Commission on International Religious Freedom previously suggested that the U.S. government revoke Bhagwat's visa and apply targeted sanctions against RSS members. The Ministry of External Affairs of India responded by calling those suggestions biased.
