Belize Government Proposes New San Pedro International Airport
The Government of Belize proposes a new international airport on Ambergris Caye, sparking opposition from local officials and tourism stakeholders over the closure of the existing airstrip.
The Government of Belize and the Belize Airport Authority have proposed constructing a new international airport near Secret Beach on northern Ambergris Caye. Officials argue the existing John Greif II Municipal Airport cannot handle current and future growth in passenger numbers and lacks the safety and expansion capabilities of a modern facility. They claim the new development would increase capacity, improve terminal facilities, and enhance disaster resilience while creating jobs.
The proposal has met strong resistance from the San Pedro Town Council and tourism stakeholders. The Town Council formally voted against closing the current downtown airstrip, citing its critical importance to local residents and businesses. During a November 2 meeting, the Belize Tourism Industry Association and local operators urged the government to prioritize urgent infrastructure needs, such as healthcare, garbage management, and traffic congestion, over a new airport.
Minister Andre Perez expressed support for a phased transition but stated that public consultation will guide his final position. The government maintains that the proposal is a proactive plan for future demand rather than a response to current failures. No final decision has been made regarding the closure of the existing airport, and the government has promised careful planning and consultation with airlines and local businesses.
