First National Bank Launches Crypto Trading for South African Clients

First National Bank has integrated cryptocurrency trading into its share platforms, allowing customers to invest in curated assets starting at R10.

First National Bank has launched a cryptocurrency investing service integrated into its existing share trading products, including Share Saver, Share Builder, Share Investor, and Share Zero. Through a partnership with registered crypto-services provider VALR, customers can trade a curated selection of assets, including Bitcoin, Ethereum, Ripple, Solana, and the stablecoin USDT. The service is available 24/7 with minimum investments starting at R10.

To maintain compliance with exchange control requirements and security standards, the bank has ring-fenced the offering. This means assets currently cannot be transferred into or out of the FNB ecosystem. Bank executives stated the move responds to high customer demand for alternative asset diversification. To mitigate risks associated with market volatility, the bank plans to provide educational materials via text, video, and audio.

Executives described the launch as the first step in a broader strategy. Future plans include expanding the range of available crypto tokens, enabling external transfers, and introducing the tokenization of real-world assets to increase financial inclusion. This move aligns with a broader trend among South African financial institutions, such as Discovery Bank, Absa, and Nedbank, to embrace blockchain technology.
