U.S. Fuel Prices Surge for Gasoline and Heating Oil

U.S. consumers face sharp price increases for gasoline and heating oil, with Maine reporting a 74% year-over-year spike in heating oil costs.

U.S. households are facing significant budget pressure as prices for both gasoline and heating oil surge. The national average retail price for regular gasoline rose to $4.157 per gallon for the week of September 7, 2026, a nearly 30% increase compared to the same period in 2025.

The Maine Department of Energy Resources reported an even steeper climb for heating oil, with statewide prices reaching $5.77 per gallon as of September 14, 2026. This represents a 74% increase from the previous year, adding approximately $675 to the cost of filling a standard 275-gallon tank. Acting Commissioner Celina Cunningham attributed these spikes to global energy prices driven by conflicts abroad, including the Iran war.

Financial research from CreditFresh indicates that these rising costs are straining budgets already burdened by high rent and grocery bills, leading consumers to reduce spending on travel and dining. The National Energy Assistance Directors Association projects that Northeast households will spend an average of $2,297 on heating oil this season, the highest price increase among seasonal fuels.

To mitigate costs, government agencies are urging residents to use energy efficiency programs and financial assistance. The U.S. Department of Energy notes that avoiding aggressive driving can improve fuel mileage by up to 40% in stop-and-go traffic, while the Federal Trade Commission advises combining errands to avoid multiple cold starts, which can double fuel consumption.
