Cleveland Fed President Warns Against Persistent Inflationary Mindset

Beth Hammack argues that Federal Reserve policy must remain restrictive to prevent Americans from accepting high inflation as the norm.

Federal Reserve Bank of Cleveland President Beth Hammack warned on September 25 that persistently high inflation could foster an "inflationary mindset" among the American public. Speaking at an event hosted by her bank, Hammack cautioned that citizens might begin to accept elevated prices as the norm, which would complicate efforts to return inflation to the Federal Reserve's 2% target.

Hammack attributed current inflationary pressures to a stable job market and robust economic demand rather than external shocks such as the Iran war or trade tariffs. She specifically questioned how a generation of Americans who have not experienced sustained target inflation would behave, arguing that monetary policy must maintain a restrictive stance to bring prices down.

These comments follow a decision by the Federal Reserve earlier in September to raise its target rate range to between 3.75% and 4%. Federal officials anticipate further rate increases before the end of the year to ensure inflation expectations remain anchored.
