DoorDash Announces 17 Billion Dollar Acquisition of Instacart

DoorDash is acquiring Instacart for $17 billion to challenge Amazon and Walmart in the United States online grocery delivery market.

DoorDash announced a $17 billion deal to acquire Instacart in an effort to challenge the dominance of Amazon and Walmart in the U.S. online grocery sector. The acquisition would give the combined company a 19% market share, providing a denser delivery network and a larger selection of goods than its primary competitors.

Chief Executive Tony Xu stated that grocery delivery is "just a fraction of what its potential could be" and noted that consumers are "still being asked to pay a premium for imperfect delivery." To address these issues, Xu plans to improve order accuracy through direct inventory management via DashMarts and investments in autonomous delivery technology.

Despite the expansion, DoorDash shares fell 9.4% last Thursday. The decline followed the announcement of a partnership between Amazon and Uber Eats, which grants Amazon Prime members free restaurant delivery on orders exceeding $25. While the deal strengthens DoorDash's position, the company faces significant capital expenditure requirements and limited pricing power compared to the scale of its rivals. The acquisition remains subject to regulatory approval, with Instacart's current price reflecting an 11% discount relative to the offer.
