Palm Beach County Scraps Proposed Beach Parking Fees

The Palm Beach County Board of County Commissioners removed a proposal to implement parking fees at 12 additional county beach parks from the fiscal year 2027 budget. The plan would have charged beachgoers at least $4 per hour to generate an estimated $7.5 million annually, intended to offset a $4 million reduction in ad valorem funding for the Parks and Recreation department.

The decision followed significant public backlash, including petitions and crowded public meetings, from residents who argued that beach access should remain free and affordable for local families. While Commissioner Maria Marino suggested a tiered system to charge only nonresidents, officials noted that state and federal grant restrictions prevent discriminatory pricing at many locations.

Palm Beach County Parks and Recreation Director Jennifer Cirillo confirmed that the fees were removed from the budget prior to the September 3 hearing at the direction of the board. The final budget is scheduled for approval on Tuesday evening, though officials indicated they may revisit the issue if future financial needs change.
