ECOWAS Summit Transitions Leadership and Sets Security Goals

The Economic Community of West African States convened its 69th Ordinary Session of the Authority of Heads of State and Government in Lungi, Sierra Leone. During the summit, Julius Maada Bio, the President of Sierra Leone, concluded his one-year tenure as chairman of the ECOWAS Authority, transferring leadership to Senegalese President Bassirou Diomaye Faye. Before stepping down, Bio commissioned a new regional conference center and logistics depot and was praised for dropping charges against former President Ernest Bai Koroma to foster national reconciliation.

The bloc addressed critical security issues, including condemning terrorism in the Sahel and Lake Chad Basin and announcing plans to operationalize a counterterrorism brigade by 2027. Leaders specifically urged Guinea to withdraw troops from the disputed Yenga and Lofa border enclaves in accordance with a March 2026 tripartite communique. The organization also denounced xenophobic attacks in South Africa.

Regional integration and governance were central to the agenda. President Joseph Boakai of Liberia signed three key agreements: the African Atlantic Gas Pipeline Project, the Compact for the Future of Regional Integration, and a Gender Parity Agreement targeting 50 percent representation in regional institutions by 2035. The summit included symbolic acts of unity, such as signing the ECOWAS Unity Wall and planting the Tree of Regional Integration, and concluded with the appointment of Francess Piagie Alghali as commissioner for political affairs, peace, and security.
