Seattle Residents File Recall Charges Against Mayor Katie Wilson

Seattle residents Melinda Jacobson and Dale Osterud filed recall charges against Katie Wilson on Tuesday, August 11, alleging the mayor neglected her public safety obligations and violated the Seattle City Charter. The petition, submitted to the King County Elections office, cites the forced resignation of former Police Chief Shon Barnes and the deactivation of CCTV cameras in the Stadium District and Little Saigon following the World Cup.

Organizers claim Wilson's policies damaged officer morale, exacerbated staffing shortages, and failed to address gun violence and human sex trafficking in North Aurora, as well as crime and drug use in the Chinatown International District. The charges are currently under review by the King County Prosecuting Attorney's Office.

If a Superior Court judge determines the charges meet legal standards for malfeasance, misfeasance, or violation of the oath of office, the petitioners will have 180 days to collect signatures to force a recall election. Mayor Wilson's office stated the petition does not appear to have merit, emphasizing that the administration remains focused on affordability and community services.
