ECB Staff Pressures Christine Lagarde Over Term Commitment
European Central Bank staff are demanding clarity from President Christine Lagarde on whether she will complete her term ending in October 2027.
The staff committee of the European Central Bank is pressuring President Christine Lagarde to confirm if she will serve her full eight-year term, which concludes in October 2027. In a letter to the Executive Board, staff representatives argued that leadership uncertainty threatens institutional confidence, complicates succession planning, and obstructs strategic priorities.
While Lagarde has previously stated she will remain in her post until 2027, she has avoided a firm commitment amid reports that she may move to the World Economic Forum. The committee also requested clarity regarding Executive Board member Isabel Schnabel, who is reportedly a candidate to lead the International Monetary Fund's Monetary and Capital Markets Department.
Staff expressed concern that these potential top-level departures could undermine internal reforms focused on career incentives and the bank's speak-up culture. This concern follows a 2025 survey indicating that only 40% of employees felt they could express their views without fear of negative consequences.
