China Launches Live-Fire Drills to Deter Taiwan Independence
The People's Liberation Army is conducting live-fire military exercises across five marine areas to deter Taiwan independence moves following a speech by President Lai Ching-te.
The People's Liberation Army began a series of live-fire military exercises on October 12, 2026, spanning five areas from the South China Sea to Liaoning province. The drills, scheduled to last through October 17, are taking place in the Yellow Sea, East China Sea, South China Sea, and Bohai Sea. While the China Maritime Safety Administration issued no-sail notices for these regions, Taiwan's Ministry of National Defense noted that the closest exercises are located 159 and 588 nautical miles away, making an immediate impact on nearby vessel operations unlikely.
Chinese officials linked the exercises to a national day speech by Taiwan President Lai Ching-te, who asserted that the Taiwanese people's right to exist must be respected. Spokesperson Chen Xi stated the drills serve to deter "reckless 'Taiwan independence' moves and plots involving foreign interference," while accusing the Democratic Progressive Party of aggressively pursuing an independence agenda. The Ministry of National Defense of China further labeled Lai a "separatist."
Taiwan's Minister of National Defense Wellington Koo confirmed that the government is closely monitoring the activities, which preliminary assessments identify as firing drills by coastal artillery and related units. Taiwan continues to prepare for various scenarios as it tracks the PLA's movements along the Chinese coastline.
