Tata Communications to Invest $450 Million in India AI Fiber Network

Tata Communications will invest $450 million to build a 10,000-km high-speed fiber network linking major Indian data center hubs to support AI and cloud demand.

Tata Communications Ltd announced a plan to invest approximately $450 million over the next three to five years to develop a 10,000-km high-speed fiber network across India. Termed an AI super highway, the project aims to link major data center hubs to support increasing demand for AI deployment, cloud adoption, and data localization.

The company will implement the network in phases, beginning with a corridor connecting Mumbai, Pune, Hyderabad, and Chennai. Subsequent expansions will target hubs in Vizag, Bhubaneswar, Jamnagar, and GIFT City. The network is designed to connect these domestic clusters to international cable landing stations, linking India with global AI hubs.

Tata Communications intends to fund the investment through its operating cash flows. The company estimates the medium-term market opportunity for data center-to-data center connectivity exceeds $1 billion, seeking a first-mover advantage while competitors prioritize data center capacity over connectivity.
