BMW Brilliance Cuts 1,800 Jobs Amid China Sales Slump
BMW Brilliance began cutting approximately 1,800 jobs at its Shenyang operations following a 25 percent drop in third-quarter sales in China.
BMW Brilliance Automotive began cutting approximately 1,800 jobs at its Shenyang operations on November 2, 2026. The reductions affect roughly 10 percent of the joint venture's headcount, primarily targeting administrative roles and frontline production staff. Departing employees reportedly receive severance based on an N+5 formula.
The layoffs follow a sharp decline in regional performance, with third-quarter deliveries in China dropping about 25 percent year over year. This slump is attributed to intensified competition from local Chinese brands. While BMW has not publicly confirmed the Shenyang layoffs, the company has twice lowered its 2026 Automotive segment profit outlook, most recently to a margin between negative 0.5 percent and positive 0.5 percent.
Management linked this guidance to structural measures and the phasing out of older hardware as the company prepares for the Neue Klasse ramp-up. These cuts mirror a broader trend across the German automotive industry, with similar workforce reductions reported at Porsche and Volkswagen. BMW has also planned 8,000 job reductions within Germany.
