Lidl Installs New Self-Checkout Tech Across UK Stores

Lidl is rolling out new self-checkout machines and expanding its Lidl & Go scanning service across the United Kingdom to increase efficiency.

Lidl Great Britain Limited is installing new self-checkout machines across all its UK stores, featuring overhead cameras, large vertical screens, and LED staff alerts. Designed by the Schwarz Group, the machines display footage of customers as they scan items in a style similar to VAR in sports. The rollout includes all new stores and a gradual retrofit of existing locations, with some manned checkouts being removed to make room for the technology.

Simultaneously, the supermarket is expanding its Lidl & Go self-scanning service to more stores across Scotland, the South East, and the South of England. This expansion follows a successful seven-store pilot. Chief Customer Officer Louise Weise stated that the early response to the service has been encouraging, noting that customers value the control and visibility over their spending.

This digital investment follows a similar efficiency-driven checkout refresh implemented by Morrisons starting in May 2025. The Schwarz Group is also introducing these same checkout designs in Lidl and Kaufland stores in Germany.
