Dan Meuser and Rachel Wallace Clash in Final Congressional Debate

Republican Congressman Dan Meuser and Democratic challenger Rachel Wallace debated foreign policy, inflation, and border security ahead of the November 3 election for Pennsylvania's 9th District.

Republican Congressman Dan Meuser and Democratic challenger Rachel Wallace held their first and only debate for Pennsylvania's 9th Congressional District on October 20 at Penn State Schuylkill's Morgan Auditorium. Organized by the Schuylkill Chamber of Commerce, the event focused on the cost of living, healthcare, and foreign policy ahead of the November 3 midterm election.

Wallace criticized Meuser's support for the war in Iran and tariffs imposed by the Trump administration, arguing that these policies drive inflation. Meuser defended his positions, citing the need to correct trade imbalances and address nuclear threats from Iran, while characterizing Democratic policies as socialism.

The candidates also clashed over domestic issues. Wallace opposed new data center projects, accusing Meuser of favoring developers through tax breaks and the removal of local control. On immigration, Wallace stated that both candidates agree on the necessity of legal entry and the prosecution of illegal criminals, though she claimed Meuser refuses to admit their shared views. Meuser criticized border conditions under the Biden-Harris administration but asserted that illegal crossings have decreased over the last 17 months.

While both candidates agreed on the severity of the fentanyl crisis, they differed on solutions. Meuser emphasized combating cartels and increasing care access, while Wallace prioritized addiction outreach and mental health resources. To address rising energy costs, Meuser advocated for building pipelines and opening Alaska for drilling.
