Abdul El-Sayed Refuses to Condemn Iranian Regime at Town Hall

Democratic U.S. Senate candidate Abdul El-Sayed faced a series of tense confrontations with student Iman Dashti regarding his stance on the Iranian government and the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC). During a "Students vs. Billionaires" town hall at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor and a subsequent event in Washington, Dashti challenged El-Sayed to renounce the Iranian regime, citing the persecution of his own family by the IRGC.

Dashti specifically questioned El-Sayed about leaked audio in which the candidate reportedly declined to comment on the death of former Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei to avoid offending constituents in Dearborn. El-Sayed responded by stating he supports movements for freedom and democracy, but he rejected U.S.-led regime change and military interventions, arguing that the United States should not act as the world's policeman and that leadership changes must be decided by the Iranian people.

Republican opponent Mike Rogers criticized the exchange, calling El-Sayed's refusal to explicitly condemn the Iranian leadership "pathetic." The confrontation occurs six weeks before Election Day, amid reports that the Senate Majority PAC has committed $30 million to support the Democratic nominee and the Fighting for Michigan PAC spent $25,000 on video engagement to target youth voters.
