U.S. Jobless Claims Unexpectedly Drop to 197,000

The United States Department of Labor reported on Thursday that initial jobless claims for the week ending September 19 unexpectedly decreased to 197,000. This figure represents a decline of 1,000 from the previous week's revised total of 198,000.

The result defied economist expectations, which had predicted that claims would rise to 204,000. The four-week moving average for jobless claims also dipped to 202,250, marking a decrease of 1,750 from the previous revised average of 204,000.
