Union Bank of India Forecasts Shift to AI Infrastructure Debt

Union Bank of India predicts a rise in debt funding for data centers and compute infrastructure to support the country's growing AI sector.

Union Bank of India released a report forecasting that AI financing demand in India will shift toward debt funding for data centers and computing infrastructure over the next three to five years. The bank identifies a massive tech talent pool and an internet user base projected to reach 1.2 billion by 2030 as primary growth drivers.

Despite these strengths, the report notes that India lags behind the United States and China in foundational models and indigenous compute infrastructure. While generative AI is now part of more than 60 percent of large IT deals, the sector faces risks from the rapid obsolescence of graphics processing units, which operate on 18-24 month cycles, and the poaching of talent by labs in the Gulf regions and the United States.

To address these challenges, the lender recommends expanding venture-debt partnerships for AI application companies and creating structured equipment-financing products specifically for GPU clusters. The report also highlights the need to navigate evolving regulatory frameworks regarding AI governance and data privacy.
