Jindal Steel to Expand Coal Gasification Capacity by 2030
Jindal Steel plans to increase its coal gasification capacity to 11 million tonnes by 2030 to support India's energy self-reliance and reduce foreign exchange outflows.
Jindal Steel plans to increase its coal gasification capacity from 4.5 million tonnes to approximately 11 million tonnes or more by the end of 2030. Speaking at the Coal Gasification India Conference 2026, Naveen Ahlawat, President and Head of Sustainability and Decarbonisation, stated the expansion aims to strengthen industrial value addition and support energy self-reliance in India.
The company currently operates a coal gasification-based direct reduced iron (DRI) plant in Angul, Odisha, and expects to commission the second phase of its two-million-tonne DRI plant by the end of 2027. To manage coal quality challenges, the company is backward-integrating with its own mines while the Ministry of Coal introduces dedicated linkages for gasification plants.
This initiative aligns with the National Coal Gasification Mission, which targets the gasification of 100 million tonnes of coal by 2047. Ahlawat noted that using domestic coal to produce chemicals, fertilizers, and synthetic natural gas could reduce foreign exchange outflows and insulate the country from external disruptions.
