Russia Launches AI Influence Campaigns Targeting U.S. Midterms
The Russian government deployed AI-generated campaigns to inflame U.S. domestic divisions and target Democratic Senate candidates ahead of the midterm elections.
The Federal Government of Russia has intensified digital influence operations designed to sow division among American voters before the midterm elections. Intelligence assessments indicate the Kremlin aims to amplify domestic tensions to favor Donald Trump over Democratic candidates, though officials found no evidence of attempts to compromise voting machinery.
Two distinct campaigns drive these efforts. The Social Design Agency manages the Doppelgänger operation, which utilizes fake personas to inflame tensions regarding U.S. support for Israel. Simultaneously, the Matryoshka operation uses AI-generated claims of corruption to target Democratic Senate candidates. These efforts mirror previous Russian influence campaigns conducted ahead of elections in France.
Private sector and government responses have varied. The social media platform X banned 13,000 accounts linked to influence operations from Russia, China, and Iran. While U.S. intelligence officials attempted to brief state officials on these specific threats, the call was postponed due to technical issues.
