Solana Reduces Block Production Time to 200 Milliseconds

Solana implemented a technical update reducing block production time to 200 milliseconds, though the SOL coin price fell 7.9% following the upgrade.

The Solana network implemented a technical update on October 9, 2026, reducing its block production time to 200 milliseconds. This adjustment makes Solana's block speed approximately 3,000 times faster than the 10-minute pace maintained by Bitcoin.

Despite the performance increase, the market responded negatively as the price of the SOL coin fell 7.9% during the week the upgrade went live. This decline made it the worst-performing major cryptocurrency for that period, contrasting with Bitcoin, which saw a 29% increase over the last 90 days without altering its block time.

Technical distinctions remain between block speed and finality, the point at which a transaction cannot be reversed. While block speed has improved, Solana's finality update, known as Alpenglow, which targets 150 milliseconds, is not yet live. For comparison, the XRP Ledger completes payment settlements in 3 to 5 seconds, while Ethereum produces blocks every 12 seconds with finality taking about 13 minutes.
