Ilham Aliyev Calls New Azerbaijan Party Largest South Caucasus Force

President Ilham Aliyev addressed the 8th Congress of the New Azerbaijan Party, emphasizing the nation's energy security and criticizing Armenian leadership.

President Ilham Aliyev declared the New Azerbaijan Party (YAP) the largest political force in Azerbaijan and the broader South Caucasus during the party's 8th Congress on October 2, 2026. Speaking at the Heydar Aliyev Center in Baku, Aliyev credited party activists for the country's recent trajectory and noted that the party has held power for over thirty years.

Aliyev asserted that Azerbaijan has become a critical geopolitical and security factor due to its energy resources, stating that the nation's role will grow as energy security remains tied to the national security of every country. He maintained that Azerbaijan's core political course remains focused on independence, statehood, economic independence, and strong military potential, though he noted that tactical and strategic goals adapt over time.

During the address, Aliyev criticized Armenian leadership, labeling previous leaders as war criminals and accusing current officials of making territorial claims and insulting the dignity of the Azerbaijani people. He contrasted this with Azerbaijan's own foreign policy, claiming the nation has never exhibited hypocrisy or double standards toward other countries.

The congress was attended by 960 delegates and followed a series of reporting conferences held from September 7 through 19. These conferences involved 16,239 participants across 84 local party organizations to review the fulfillment of tasks established during the party's 7th Congress.
