Chile and Venezuela Agree to Restore Diplomatic Ties
President José Antonio Kast and acting President Delcy Rodríguez agreed to a gradual normalization of relations between Chile and Venezuela during the UN General Assembly.
Chilean President José Antonio Kast and Venezuela's acting President Delcy Rodríguez met in New York on Wednesday during the 81st United Nations General Assembly to initiate the restoration of diplomatic relations. The leaders agreed to a gradual normalization process, starting with the restoration of consular services to help Venezuelan migrants in Chile with documentation and facilitate their return to Venezuela.
This rapprochement marks a shift from the policy of former Chilean President Gabriel Boric, who had severed ties after questioning the transparency of Venezuela's 2024 elections. President Kast expressed support for the recovery of Venezuela's institutions and indicated that full diplomatic relations are expected in the coming months.
While pursuing international diplomacy, President Kast faced a domestic legislative defeat. The Chamber of Deputies of Chile rejected a constitutional amendment that would have extended the detention period for migrants facing administrative expulsion from five to 30 days.
