Saskatchewan NDP Demands Probe After Five Inmates Wrongly Released
The Saskatchewan NDP is calling for an independent investigation after the provincial government mistakenly released five inmates from custody in 2026.
The Saskatchewan New Democratic Party is demanding an independent investigation and a public report after five provincial inmates were mistakenly released from custody in 2026. Opposition Leader Carla Beck and Shadow Minister Nicole Sarauer argue that the errors compromise public safety and undermine confidence in the justice system, citing a lack of government transparency regarding the inmates' risk levels and the duration of their wrongful releases.
Community Safety Minister Michael Weger confirmed the five releases, stating that public notifications were issued in four cases while the fifth inmate returned to custody voluntarily. Weger defended the province's processes, noting that administrative errors are rare and that the error rate declined from 0.6 percent in 2022 to 0.01 percent by 2025. He stated that more than 99.9 percent of offender releases are completed accurately each year.
To prevent future errors, the government has implemented "Do Not Release" information packages for transport agencies and improved inter-departmental communication. However, the NDP maintains that the government is failing to deliver a response plan and suggests the incidents reflect a lack of proper resourcing in correctional facilities as provincial crime rates rise.
