Michael Saylor Challenges Elon Musk on AI and Money
Michael Saylor argues that human desire for status-conferring luxury goods will prevent artificial intelligence from making money irrelevant, contradicting predictions by Elon Musk.
Billionaire Michael Saylor challenged Elon Musk's prediction that artificial intelligence will render money irrelevant by creating a world of universal high income and abundant goods. In an interview with Steven Bartlett, Saylor argued that while AI may make basic necessities cheaper or free, human nature as status-oriented animals ensures that people will always desire scarcer, high-status assets.
Saylor cited historical technological advances in medicine and sanitation as evidence that increasing abundance merely raises the baseline for luxury rather than eliminating the need for currency. He maintained that certain luxuries, such as private jets and yachts, will remain exclusive and therefore valuable.
Other industry leaders anticipate an era of AI-driven abundance. Google DeepMind Chairman Demis Hassabis predicted a new golden era of discovery and a new renaissance. Venture capitalist Vinod Khosla also expects bountifulness but noted that economic benefits will depend on government responses to job displacement, suggesting universal basic income as a potential equalizer to ensure median income rises alongside average income.
