Mobile County Sheriff Faces Backlash Over ICE-Themed Halloween Display

Mobile County Sheriff Paul Burch faces criticism after his wife installed a Halloween display depicting an ICE raid on skeletons wearing sombreros and ponchos.

A Halloween display at the home of Paul Burch, the elected sheriff of Mobile County, Alabama, sparked widespread condemnation after photos circulated on social media. The decorations depicted skeletons dressed as Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents pursuing skeletons wearing sombreros and ponchos over a fence. Neighbors and community leaders, including Grace Rensendez McCaffery of Latino Media Gulf Coast, described the display as racist, dehumanizing, and likely to create fear within the local immigrant community.

Michelle Alfonso Burch, the sheriff's wife, claimed full responsibility for the scene. She described the display as a tongue-in-cheek commentary based on her Cuban background and her views on the need for changes in federal immigration enforcement. She asserted that the sheriff had no involvement in the design or setup other than mowing the grass around the decorations.

The controversy coincided with other tensions involving the sheriff's office. Community members highlighted a separate incident where video showed a deputy punching a man, Henry Castilo, during an immigration operation; Burch defended the deputy's actions, stating the man resisted arrest. Additionally, as the controversy emerged shortly before the local Latin Fest, Burch denied that any immigration operations were targeting the festival, maintaining that federal agents target individuals with criminal backgrounds.
