Magdalena Andersson Declares Inability to Form Swedish Government

Magdalena Andersson, leader of the Swedish Social Democrats, announced Monday that she is unable to form a government. This decision comes despite her centre-left bloc securing a narrow majority of 176 seats, compared to 173 for the incumbent right bloc.

Andersson stated that her efforts to build a coalition were undercut when the Left Party chose to back a parliamentary speaker candidate from the rival Moderate Party. She noted that based on conversations with the Left Party, she concluded there is currently no possibility for her to form a government.

The recent election functioned as a referendum on Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson's pledge to form a coalition with the far-right Sweden Democrats. The speaker of parliament will now determine which candidate is tasked with securing the necessary backing to form a government, with Kristersson remaining a potential candidate.
