BJP Launches Statewide Protests Against Himachal Pradesh Government

The Bharatiya Janata Party launched a statewide agitation on August 5, 2026, to protest the Congress-led administration of Himachal Pradesh. Led by Leader of Opposition Jai Ram Thakur and state president Rajeev Bindal, thousands of party workers marched through Shimla and staged a gherao and sit-in at Oak Over, the official residence of Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu.

Protesters accused the government of pursuing a politics of vendetta by pressuring officials to file false criminal cases against political opponents, including Bindal and MLAs Sudhir and Ashish Sharma. BJP MLA Sudhir Sharma stated that party workers would not be intimidated by the threat of imprisonment. Beyond legal disputes, the party cited a deterioration in law and order, widespread corruption, and the government's failure to deliver electoral promises regarding employment and financial aid for women.

The demonstration culminated in a sit-in outside the Chief Minister's residence before police halted the gathering. The BJP announced plans to expand its opposition by organizing monthly protests in every assembly constituency and mandal. Party leaders intend to further challenge the administration during the upcoming assembly session beginning August 21.
