New Zealand Employers Face Tsunami of AI-Generated Job Applications

Recruiters in New Zealand are using AI filters to manage a surge of polished, AI-generated applications that often lack specific evidence of experience.

Employers and recruiters in New Zealand are experiencing a surge of job applications as candidates increasingly use artificial intelligence to generate polished CVs and cover letters. David Cunningham, CEO of Squirrel, reported receiving over 1,000 applications for a single role, leading the company to implement AI tools that filter candidates by work experience rather than cover letters.

Recruitment experts warn that while AI makes it easy to produce professional-looking documents, these applications often overstate experience and lack verifiable evidence. Hayley Pickard of Fortitude Group noted that this trend has led to screening fatigue among employers. Conversely, Paula O'Kane of the University of Otago cautioned that the reliance on automated screening tools creates a risk of false negatives, where qualified candidates are inadvertently filtered out.

To differentiate themselves, experts advise job seekers to use AI only for editing and to maintain a natural human voice. Some suggest that including unique, unconventional achievements may help candidates capture the attention of AI filters. While some applicants use AI to exaggerate skills, such as claiming advanced Excel expertise for basic knowledge, recruiters emphasize that straightforward, human-centric applications are now more likely to stand out than overly polished ones.
