Five Candidates Vie for Sault Ste. Marie Mayoralty
Five candidates are competing for the mayoral position in Sault Ste. Marie following the official close of municipal election nominations.
Matthew Shoemaker, the incumbent mayor of Sault Ste. Marie, is seeking a second term as nominations close for the upcoming municipal election. He faces four challengers for the mayoral seat: Selva Rasaiah, Joel Rowswell, Matthew Toffelmire, and Josh McNally.
The race for city leadership extends to the city council, where 30 candidates are competing for 10 positions across five wards. Eight incumbents are among those seeking reelection to the council. The municipal ballot will also feature races for trustees of the Algoma District School Board and the Huron-Superior Catholic District School Board.
City officials are currently vetting the candidates for legal eligibility. The official certified list of all candidates is scheduled for release on Monday.
