Como Mayor Bans Bicycles in Historic City Center
Mayor Alessandro Rapinese banned riding bicycles in 30 streets of Como's historical center to improve pedestrian safety following a personal accident.
Mayor Alessandro Rapinese has banned riding both electric and traditional bicycles in approximately 30 streets within the walled historical center of Como, Italy. Effective in September, the measure requires cyclists to dismount and walk their bikes. The ban is part of a broader Limited Traffic Zone package intended to manage tourist growth, which also introduces restricted delivery hours and new vehicle permits.
Rapinese stated the decision was necessary for public safety, admitting the measure was influenced by a personal experience where he was hit by an electric bike while leaving city hall. Despite the mayor's justification, the rule has faced significant backlash from residents and political groups. The Democratic Party argued the ban penalizes sustainable transport, while Paolo Emilio Russo of Forza Italia described the measure as "crazy".
Civic opposition has escalated into organized action. The group Civitas Como has challenged the legitimacy of the rule, and the Nova Como association has scheduled a protest bike ride for September 12. Rapinese has refused to overturn the ban, citing the need to prevent future injuries.
