Xbox Outage Blocks Game Access for 15 Hours
Microsoft Corporation restored Xbox services after an internal licensing failure blocked global users from signing in and launching games for approximately 15 hours.
A widespread global disruption affected Xbox Live services beginning late July 26, 2026, lasting approximately 15 hours. The outage prevented users across all console generations, from Xbox 360 to Xbox Series X|S, from signing in, accessing game libraries, and completing purchases. Many users encountered error code 0x87e107df, which occurs when the system cannot verify digital game licenses.
Microsoft Corporation engineers identified the cause as the failure of an internal shared licensing service that disrupted entitlement checks. This failure created a cascading effect that impacted multiple products and several publishing and store partners. While some reports indicated a total block on all titles, other accounts noted that users with physical discs remained unaffected, highlighting vulnerabilities in all-digital ownership.
Services were mitigated and restored by the afternoon of July 27, though recovery occurred unevenly across different regions. Xbox Chief Technology Officer Scott Van Vliet characterized the situation as unacceptable and announced a full post-incident review to harden dependencies and eliminate single points of failure. The event follows a pattern of recent instability, including a brief outage on July 23 and similar disruptions to the PlayStation Network the previous week, occurring amid recent layoffs within Microsoft's gaming division.
