Protesters Heckle NYC Mayor Zohran Mamdani at October 7 Vigil

New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani faced protests and accusations of betrayal while attending an October 7 memorial vigil in Manhattan's Union Square.

New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani was heckled by pro-Palestinian protesters during an October 7 candlelight vigil organized by Israelis for Peace in Manhattan's Union Square. Demonstrators swarmed the event, calling Mamdani a traitor and accusing him of genocide for attending the memorial, which commemorated both Jews killed by Hamas and Palestinians killed in the subsequent war. Some protesters displayed Hamas symbols during the disruption.

Mamdani stated he was proud to attend the event, where Democratic congressional nominee Brad Lander also spoke and faced targeting by the crowd. Governor Kathy Hochul condemned the disruptions, stating that waving the flags of terrorist organizations during a vigil for victims was absolutely despicable.

Following the vigil, Mamdani met with Palestinian New Yorkers at Ayat Hinds Hall. During a subsequent press conference, he declined to say if he would revise his official October 7 anniversary statement, which Jewish groups had criticized for focusing more on Israel's military campaign in Gaza than on the initial Hamas attacks.

Socialist streamer Hasan Piker defended the protesters, arguing that the demonstrations resulted from Mamdani's failure to address the pro-Palestine movement and his perceived capitulation to pro-Israel pressure. Neera Tanden, head of the Center for American Progress, criticized Mamdani's association with Piker.
