Oklahoma Residents Demand Public Votes on Data Center Projects

Oklahoma residents are petitioning for greater transparency and public voting rights regarding the development of data centers in Yukon and Tulsa.

Residents in Oklahoma are organizing to demand greater transparency and accountability as data centers expand into their communities. In Yukon, Charlie Scott is collecting signatures for a city charter change that would mandate a public vote on data center proposals. Scott cites concerns over noise, traffic, and the use of nondisclosure agreements between developers and local officials.

In Tulsa, residents including Barbara Coleman have raised concerns that the infrastructure required for these facilities could lead to increased electricity fees for households. The Public Service Company of Oklahoma responded by stating that data center consumers are responsible for their own infrastructure and service costs, although residential rates may still fluctuate based on broader market factors.

Technical discussions regarding the facilities have focused on resource consumption. Henry Cubillan of Kelvion explained that water usage varies by design, contrasting water-consuming evaporative towers with closed-loop recirculating systems. While an informal Facebook poll showed approximately 90% opposition to data centers among respondents, the poll was not a scientific measure of public opinion.
