U.S. Domestic Airfares Rise 16 Percent Across Major Cities

Average domestic airfares in the 50 busiest U.S. metro areas rose 16 percent between April and June 2026, outpacing overall inflation.

Average domestic airfares in all 50 of the busiest U.S. metro areas increased between April and June 2026 compared to the same period in 2025. Nationally, the average one-way fare rose 16 percent, increasing from $241 to $279, a rate that significantly outpaced the overall inflation rate of 3.9 percent.

Engine, a business travel platform, analyzed U.S. Department of Transportation data to identify the regional variations. Detroit recorded the highest increase at 24.6 percent, followed by Las Vegas at 23.7 percent, while San Diego and Omaha saw the smallest gains at approximately 10 percent. Despite the general upward trend, fares decreased on roughly 11 percent of analyzed city pairs, including routes between Philadelphia and Seattle and Austin and San Francisco.

Rising jet fuel costs, which jumped from $2.31 to $4.11 per gallon, served as a primary driver for the price hikes. The May 2 shutdown of Spirit Airlines also contributed to higher costs on specific routes, though the analysis indicates this event only accounts for about one percentage point of the national increase.
