Republican Alan Wilson Wins South Carolina Gubernatorial Race
Republican nominee Alan Wilson defeated Democrat Jermaine Johnson to win the South Carolina gubernatorial election on a platform of tax cuts and school choice.
The Associated Press projected Republican nominee and Attorney General Alan Wilson as the winner of the South Carolina gubernatorial race on Tuesday. Wilson defeated Democratic nominee and state lawmaker Jermaine Johnson to secure the governorship, where he will serve alongside Lieutenant Governor nominee Mike Rickenbaker.
Wilson campaigned on a platform focused on infrastructure modernization, educational reform, and affordability. His specific policy goals include the expansion of universal school choice and the reduction of property taxes and the state income tax. In his victory speech, Wilson described the election as a "turning point in South Carolina history" and stated his intention to be a "transformational governor."
Johnson conceded the race via telephone earlier in the evening. Both candidates committed to working together to unify the state following the contest. Wilson's general election victory follows a competitive Republican primary and runoff in which he received endorsements from U.S. Representative Nancy Mace and Donald Trump.
