Music Publishers Accuse AI Firms of Strong-Arming Australia

The International Confederation of Music Publishers warns that AI companies are lobbying the Australian government to weaken copyright laws for model training.

The International Confederation of Music Publishers (ICMP) has accused AI companies of attempting to pressure the Australian government into weakening copyright laws to allow the training of AI models without compensating creators. The ICMP provided evidence that Google's Gemini has already reproduced lyrics from Australian artists, including Nick Cave and Kylie Minogue, contradicting claims that Australian content is excluded due to copyright rules.

AI firms, including OpenAI and Anthropic, argue that licensing the entire internet is impossible and that fair use principles are essential for technological development. Anthropic informed the government that current laws could render their operations illegal without individual licenses. The ICMP asserts that Australia is the only country among 62 approached by tech firms that is seriously considering these legislative changes.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese previously described the unauthorized use of work for AI training as theft. However, a parliamentary committee on artificial intelligence recently recommended that the government examine current copyright settings to resolve a perceived stalemate between the tech industry and creators.
